Nobody wants to add to or be part of the elderly care crisis. There are hundreds of horror stories of the elderly dying in care homes due to the lack of care going on, and it scares people a lot to think they may one day be reliant on the system they can see falling apart before their very eyes. Whilst there are care homes which take very good care of their guests, there are still elderly living alone who need care every day and receive the absolute minimum. The problem is that carers simply don't have the time to spend with each patient, and instead need to be in and out as fast as possible, spending as little as half an hour or fifteen minutes with any given patient.
It has never been more apparent that living at home with family is a sensible thing to do for as long as possible. Some people require so much care that a carer either needs to live with them or they themselves need to move to live in a care home, but for those who can live with the simple support of their family, life is much better. Apart from anything, people love to be around their family, and it can be very comforting in old age to see your children and grandchildren every day as they help you get up and get dressed.
Living at home for longer has never been more possible, thanks to the range of different advancements which are designed to help care for the elderly. Stairlifts for example, are just one advancement in assistive technology which allow people to use their stairs, even if they suffer from horrendously achy joint or arthritis. One stairlift can cost thousands of pounds, but that's nothing when compared with the amount of money living in a care home full time costs.
Many people don't want to ever move into a care home, as they want to live with their family and experience their company for as long as they can. This is easily possible if the family are willing to care for their relatives, and if their relatives are capable of looking after themselves for short periods of time during the day, as no family will have one person at home constantly. By living this way, the strain on the elderly care system will be lifted, but only slightly, as with every new generation there is an elongated life expectancy.
